Layering New York City, I created this view from pictures taken mainly in the Chelsea neighborhood. Tom Valentine from the Art Department spent three weeks while I shot 8X10 negatives from a variety of vantage points in this iconic New York City neighborhood. I printed this image originally at 32 feet high by 55 feet wide. Michael Riva (designer of Spider-Man 3 and the Amazing Spider-Man) told me later that this was one of the best backings that he had seen of mine.

Richard Lund entered the film industry in 1980. He did specialized photography making background pictures for motion pictures and television. He shot 8x10 plates for his first movie in Riverside California. The film was Buddy, Buddy directed by Billy Wilder and starring Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau. He printed the pictures with a crew on Kodak Translite film. Thus began his career. Personally he photographed large format images for 240 feature films and a lot of television. Additionally he supervised production of about two thousand background pictures. He originated the Chromatrans full color backgrounds, inventing the seaming process for this new style polyester based film. (The original Translites were black and white with color...
